Island by Ponti Design Studio is a double-decker driverless tram designed for the city of Hong Kong in the post-Covid era.

This highly innovative design concept incorporates industrial design, transportation design, public design, urban mobility and sustainability. The project includes exterior, interior and tram stop design. With the Coronavirus pandemic, people are shunning public transport and relying much more on private transport.

We wanted to reimagine public transport in the post-Covid era from a prevention perspective. Especially in the densely populated city of Hong Kong, where social distancing is hard to achieve. The idea of designing a tram is no coincidence: trams are one of the city’s landmarks and the tramways celebrate their 115th anniversary this year. The concept of social distancing, which limits people’s freedom to move and interact became the design challenge and focal point for the new concept.

The name Island references the innovative design of the interiors, where large circular benches facilitate social distancing and passengers sit facing outwards in a radial pattern. The exterior design is inspired by the Hong Kong urban landscape, which features vast surfaces of glass and rounded-corner buildings. Natural light floods the interiors during the day through the curved windows and a domed top, which also provide awe-inspiring views at night. The driverless technology optimizes the interior space of the tram, making it easier to manage travel times and increase onboard safety. The tram has a retractable connector for rapid charging at tram stops. Large vertical LEDs enhance visibility in all weather conditions. The interior design contrasts with the exterior. Minimalist design, charcoal black walls, soft circular seating, wooden floors and trims with natural finish all create a neutral and friendly environment.

This chromatic diversity, in addition to the dark color palette, frames and accentuates the beauty of the Hong Kong urban landscape. The simple tram stop structure has sleek, essential lines. Being open on both sides, it facilitates a linear, orderly flow of people and a healthier environment. The graphics guide passengers through the boarding and payment process, made by Octopus Card, before boarding. This streamlines the boarding procedure and optimizes the available space inside.

Island explores a wide spectrum of design aspects, from the product to the urban landscape. It represents the forward-thinking spirit of Hong Kong, and introduces a new concept of public transport that overcomes the practice of social distancing. We shouldn’t be dividing and separating but instead rethinking public spaces with a seamless, integrated and effective design approach.

A hybrid of past and present with a distinctly modernist edge. Oblong is made from the best, most resilient components available, such as Italian leather, sapphire crystal, steel mesh bands from Pforzheim in Germany and a Swiss-made movement with 10 years of battery life.

Every single component on the Oblong watch is custom-made for Bulbul; from the hands, the crown, the buck and the loop, to the leather straps, the case back and the sapphire crystal glass.

This digital inhaler is a practical and innovative asthma device created by design firm Cardboard Helicopter for Global Prime Healthcare.

From the designers: Global Prime Healthcare approached us with the desire to add an innovative delivery mechanism for self-management of asthma and COPD. We developed a digital inhaler to include a digital readout to allow patients to know more about the inhaled dosage, the amount of pumps that remain, as well as insight about the optimal moments to use the device, all in real time. The intuitive application was also developed to detect impairment in medication usage, and boasts enhanced product stability and increased lung penetration of the medication. The back lit LCD screen links to a cartridge, providing a consistent readout for patients so they won’t ever be without medication when they need it. The design went through months of hands-on testing and ethnography development to ultimately produce an inhaler that was easy to use, ergonomic and intuitive for asthma and COPD sufferers of all ages.

Having completed extensive research on the difficulties of using an inhaler, we wanted to design the first inhaler to allow users to use their entire hand to apply pressure, instead of just an index finger. This provides children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities or arthritis with an easy and pain-free way to delivery medication through the device.

Trace by Studio Ayaskan, is a clock that shows the passage of time by leaving a trail of color as time passes. The design was created for Lexus Design Awards 2016 with the mentorship of Snarkitecture. The piece responds to the the theme of anticipation.

“Through “Trace”, we wanted to show that there is a connection between the past present and future. We wanted to visualise the passing of time. In order to both take a moment to reflect on the present and realise that the present not only leaves traces in our past, but also sets the path to our possible futures.”

Spike Aerospace, designers of the Spike S-512 Supersonic Jet, has just announced another innovation in aircraft design they plan to incorporate into the jet.

The new supersonic jet will feature a revolutionary windowless passenger cabin so no more glaring sun and no more shades to pull down or push up. Instead, the interior walls will be covered with a thin display screens embedded into the wall. Cameras surrounding the entire aircraft will construct breathtaking panoramic views displayed on the cabin screens. Passengers will be able to dim the screens to catch some sleep or change it to one of the many scenic images stored in the system.

Spike S-512 is a supersonic jet that will enable travelers to reach destinations in half the time it currently takes. Passengers will be able to fly from NYC to London in 3-4 hours instead of 6-7 hours. LA to Tokyo in 8 hours instead of 14-16 hours.
